MWEB has landed in severe trouble with the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa over its recent adverts offering FREE Line speed upgrades.
Many users complained to MWEB and the ASA after MWEB sent “misleading” email advertisements to their customers about an upgrade to their uncapped ADSL services.
One of the adverts is shown below and it is easy to see why users may have been confused.
Imagine the users’ surprise when after the “free” upgrade they were asked to pay more than R100 extra per month.
When challenged by the users and eventually the ASA about the practice MWEB said it offered both ADSL data-only products and ADSL data products with line rental, and that only the Data portion was a “free” upgrade and that the line also required an upgrade
The ASA ruled that MWEB had not made that clear in their advertising and instructed them to stop using this advert immediately.
MWEB said it is “regretful that its communication may not have been clear enough”.
